liebestraum 3 rhythm

Is it just me, or do so many people - well-known performers included - play this in entirely the wrong time signature? (ie they play in 12/8 rather than 6/4).

I've heard so many recordings where the rhythm is clearly being played as 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a; but as far as I can see the piece is definitely in 6/4, so it should be 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & 6 &.

Is my edition wrong?

The 6/4 shouldn't exactly affect the sound of the piece, but the writing.  Plus there shoudn't be strict pulsing anyway unless it is written.
A modern house without a flush toilet... uncanny.
