Ervin Nyiregyhazi
on: February 07, 2010, 09:50:46 PM
I found a website dedicated to the legendary pounding madman, Ervin Nyiregyhazi, including uploads of his playing from piano rolls in the 1920's to live performances in the 1970's. There are some sloppy moments, but his razor sharp personality cuts through, transcending the limitations. His Liszt is gigantic, full of earth shaking force and expression, but also hardly paralleled beauty and understanding...as if he himself is every bit as big as the pieces he plays - truly a larger than life figure. He will move you, shake you, and may well shatter you.

Enjoy.  :)

I like his choice of tempi in the Brahms sonata. The performance was also impressive. The Tristan und Isolde transcription was almost unbearable to listen to though.
