Which keyboard to purchase?
on: January 21, 2011, 02:09:09 AM
I'm in need of a digital/portable keyboard. I most certainly need all 88 keys and would prefer grand hammer action. I have been looking at Casio's Privia line. Which would be better, a PX-130, PX-330, or PX-3? All seem like great keyboards, but I need some opinions!

1) Since you want a portable keyboard, you want to use it for a band? You might have some other, more technical, requirements for it for that reason. What type of sounds, editing, USB, memory, connections etc. You'll have to decide that for yourself.
2) Go to a shop and try them out

casio privias are great for the price. I tried my dad's a couple of months ago. Wonderful sound, and the feel of the keys is great. Very realistic. The only downside is the action is a bit noisy. If you play quietly, you'll really notice how much the action rattles. If you go a little more expensive and get a Roland, you might like this better. Just as good sound as the privia (probably better) and the action is very soft. I've got a Roland F-100 at home. It's not quite a keyboard but you can remove it from its base and attach it to other speakers if you want.  I saw a Roland FP 4 in the store the other day, this might be what you're looking for. It seems almost like a Privia, without the noisy action. Good luck  :)

Here's an FP4

Before you decide try a Yamaha CP5 or P95. You'll be amazed at how much like a grand they are. I prefer the CP5 myself...

Thanks!

In my opinion, the P95 will have the closest real hammer feel to it. Not to mention that it would have the truest grand piano sound...

If you want to take your keyboard on the road, I'm told by friends that Korg and Roland stand up best to frequent moving and handling.

I know I'm going against the grain a bit here, but I personally like the PX-3 and even the PX-330 better than the Yamaha P95, though they're all about the same quality. If you want good hammer action and you decide to get a Casio, I'd recommend the PX-3 over the PX-330 because the key action is definitely improved. And if you have any interest in other instruments and effects on your DP, the PX-3 beats the P95 by a mile. You can read a review about the the PX-3/X-330 here:

Happy owner of a PX-330. Hope to get a fancy Roland someday. PX-330 review here:

Nice review Pinball. To each their own I guess. The correct thing for anyone is doing homework and physically comparing side by side. Some prefer one over another for many reasons. I myself have played on enough various keyboards to know what I like. For reasons of preference I had a Casio until I played a Yamaha. Others are just the opposite. Go figure!
What sold me on the Yamaha CP5 is playing it sitting next to a grand piano and switching back and forth. Not trying to talk anybody into anything here. But I am saying that's a good way to compare.
Just make sure the keyboard has weighted, semi-weighted or touch sensitive keys.
