New Competition Piece
on: April 04, 2011, 07:36:02 PM
Hello,
I have a piano competition in about a year or so, and I'm looking for a new piece to play. I am quite a skilled pianist; recently i have played Ravel's Toccata, but i can definitely play harder songs. Basically, I'm looking for some opinions on which of the following pieces would be best for a competition, but I'm also totally open to suggestions.
Prokofiev-Toccata
Debussy-L'isle joyeuse
Alkan-Le festin d'esope
Alkan-Le Preux
(Obviously the Alkan pieces are incredibly difficult, but i'm sure that i would be able to push myself to play them)
Thanks!

The Alkan is probably less frequently encountered, so it might make a refreshing change for the judges. Whichever one you choose, for god's sake don't call it a "song" at the competition--it's a PIECE! (That's like calling a motorcycle a car...yes, they are both modes of transportations, but there the resemblance ends!)

Haha, wow, sorry. I didn't mean to call it that. My parents don't really know too much about music, so calling it a song pretty much comes from them constantly saying that. I do know better.
And thanks for the advice.

Post a recording of your Tombeau. Also, which competition? We can all watch out for the guy with Le Preux in his repertoire if you tell us <:

If this work is so threatening, it is not because it's simply strange, but competent, rigorously argued and carrying conviction.

Wow John, that is kind of a creepy smile, if it is a smile... Anyway, what piece will be accompanying it? The difference or similarities of competition pieces is (for me), very important. Most, if not all competition rules state that the pieces must be of contrasting style.
I feel the Alkan pieces would be a pleaser in a competition, especially Le Preux. If you are not able to play them, then I would say the Prokofiev Toccata would be your best bet.
Good luck with your studies.

I'm sorry, i never actually recorded that piece...i'm also not so good at it anymore, so...
For this particular competition, it's simply a single piece we need to play in front of all the other competitors and judge. For other competitions that i do, i would need contrasting repertoire, but i already am working on some older music that would contrast these.
Thanks!

Who cares... it could be a local competition that all of us might not have heard of before.
