you don't "need" it, you want it
facebook is addictive just like online gaming.
In fact, even forums like these are addicting, they did some medical research and showed that people have this obsessive addicting to constantly check if there's anything new, any new replies in a topic, any new status from friends, etc, and when there is, some chemical goes off in the brain.
One of the only reasons I use facebook is for homework help, or when I'm confused about due dates, school trips, ... etc

My grade has a group on there, and people are constantly posting questions, answers, worksheets, test reviews, spam....

Without facebook, I'd be at a huge disadvantage.
Oh I also use it sometimes to talk to my friends if they don't get my emails/ texts/ etc. Or to get photos after a special event.
Otherwise, I find facebook kind of boring... and stalkerish. :| I spend less than one hour on it per week.
But that medical study is interesting...
PS: to answer your question, I have a friend who doesn't use facebook. She just uses my other friend's account.
