Which is approximately when it was written
I know that, but I had written
but it all seems to belong in the early part of the last century
by which I mean that this is where it seems largely to "belong", whereas the best work of Bartók and Szymanowski belongs to all time since it was written; perhaps I did not make that distinction sufficiently clear.
I can accept Szymanowski
Great news! One of the most remarkable composers of the first part of the previous century.
but not Bartok.
Shame! Why? Do you not "accept"
anything of Bartók? There are so many wonderful things - the piano studies (which are less well known than they should be), the two violin concertos, the viola concerto, the second piano concerto,
The Wooden Prince,
The Miraculous Mandarin, Dance Suite, all six quartets (especially 1, 2 & 5), Music for Strings Percussion and Celesta, Divertimento, Sonata for two pianos and percussion, Concerto for Orchestra...
I take it we will not hear from you further on the subject then
Then you take it wrongly, since you just have.
Best,
Alistair
