I'm "Learning" Rach 3!!!!!
on: August 26, 2004, 10:03:39 PM
I know I am not ready for this giant of a concerto YET but I figured I might as well learn the notes now and develop the technique later (like probably in 15 years or so). What do you think would be the easiest way to just learn the notes but not ruin my technique for it later (I know alot of people learn it too early). Maybe I could just learn to plat it SUPER slowly. What do you think? If I learn the notes I could brag to people that I "KNOW" the Rach3 (just kidding, and no, that's not my reason).

I would suggest that, with a piece of this magnitude; you don't start learning the notes until you have the technique.  Then, you can brag that you recognize your limits, something that very few people can do.

However, if you do want to make progress on it, perhaps you could start by listening to lots of recordings, and getting to the point that you have the whole thing memorized mentally.  That way, when you do begin, you'll find it much easier to commit to finger memory.

Go speed racer go!
Well that's my rant and cheer, because stuff regarding Rach 3 from now on will go in one eye and come out the other (not discouragement, just tired of Rach 3 stuff)
But yeah, you go guy.  8)

Well, I don't really think the first movement is that hard really (except for the cadenza). Wouldn't you say that Liszt's concerto's are on the same level as that first movement.  And I don't really get what you are saying Spatula (I only got the stuff about being tired of rach3 stuff, which I agree with but as you see me writing this post is kinda hypocritical, don't you think?).

I didn't want to start to rag on you because of the Rach 3, but the whole topic now is kinda spoiled with 8 year olds chanting "I've learned the piano for 4 days now, can I do the Rach 3" sorta Sh1t.  So that's why its kinda exhausting and it loses its excitement when someone really wants to go for it.  I'm not discouraging you, it's just it's kinda lost it touch now.

In my opinion, you greatly underestimate the difficulty of the first movement of the Rach 3.  Just look at all the fast passages, and some passages of great delicacy, the whole thing is very difficult.  Also, you can't exclude the cadenza when you discuss the difficulty of the piece.  You wouldn't know the piece unless you could play the cadenza, so that adds even more difficulty.

DLu, how old are you?

Learning notes will be easier if you have the theory and technique first.

Do you mean learning the notes in the sense in which I am 'learning the notes' of the Mendellsohn violin concerto and the Elgar cello concerto? Through repeated listening of great recordings? Or do you mean learn the notes in the sense of plodding through the score of the Third Concerto at the piano over and over until you ruin your technique and make other people hate you?

The first way. I don't actually want to play it,  I just want to memorize the entire score.

Oh, well in that case, sorry for assuming you meant podding along, learning the notes.

Regular listening and following along with the score should help you there.  If every day you listened to the concerto once, with the score, and really concentrated, you should have a very thorough aural picture of the piece before too long.

Thanks for asking my original question. I think that should work. With 15 years of doing that I will probably be sickl of it (oh well, I don't care). No need for anymore responses or replys.
Thanks you very much *cough*
