A question about moments musicaux
on: December 14, 2011, 01:43:39 PM
I have been wondering, it feels like the general opinion is that the moments musicaux are, as a rule, easier than the impromptus by Franz Schubert. I can agree with that, but aren't the number 4 and 5 from moments musicaux at least just as difficult as some of the impromptus?

What do you think? Are there any moments musicaux that are harder than any of the impromptus? What's the relative difficulty of the moments musicaux, from hardest to easiest(grade)?

Cheers,
beebert

The moments musicaux, in many ways, are very difficult to play successfully.  Take the 4th one, for example.  Not really technically hard to get through, but to make something of it?
4-5-1-6-2-3
Kempff was an absolute master at making sense of them.

The number 4 is lovely though, isn't it? A little reminder of Bach in some parts, don't you agree? I have played the number 1,2,3 and I am right now working on number 4. Maybe not to difficult technically but certainly not easy, perhaps a difficult grade 7(?) piece and absolutely harder than the first three in my opinion. Of the impromptus I have only done two from op 90, number 3 and number 4 and I actually found these easier in many ways than the moment musical number 4.

I would definitely say 4 and 5 are harder than the schubert impromptu op. 142 no. 2. I would also say the moment musicaux are very close in level to impromptus op. 90 no. 2 and possibly even op. 90 no. 4.
