Grand regulation test questions
on: May 23, 2012, 05:54:45 AM
Hello all, i'm trying to work out the solution for the questions below and wonder if i'm over thinking them or are the questions (and possible answer options) ambiguous? Your answers would be greatly appreciated.
1. The probable cause of grand hammers bobbling (double striking) during soft playing is:
(a) too much key dip
(b) repetition lever spring set too strong
(c) the jack being too far toward the performer, relative to the knuckle core
(d) the hammer blow distance too close
2. The probable cause of grand hammers bobbling during loud playing is
(a) the drop screw set too low
(b) the repetition lever spring too weak
(c) the backchecks needs regulation
(d) key dip too deep
3. Correct capstan adjustment on a grand results in
(a) correct hammer blow distance
(b) hammer shanks lightly resting on the hammer rest rail
(c) correct key dip
(d) slight lost motion
4. Dampers should start moving approximately
(a) at the same time the hammers move
(b) when the hammers are halfway to the string
(c) when hammers are 1/8 inch from strings
(d) at the same time as let off
5. If a grand damper is slow to return, which of the following would possibly be the cause?
(a) the repetition spring is not responsive
(b) the damper wire is misaligned in the guide rail
(c) the damper stop rail is set too low
(d) the hammer flange is a little sluggish
6. The jack should be aligned with
(a) the drop screw
(b) the capstan
(c) the knuckle
(d) the knuckle core.
7. Double escapement
(a) includes drop and let off.
(b) means that the jack must have let off and aftertouch.
(c) produces double striking.
(d) is found only on older pianos.
8. About 1/4” of lost motion should be in the
(a) soft pedal.
(b) sostenuto pedal
(c) damper pedal.
(d) damper lift.
My answers are
1b, 2c, 3a, 4b, 5b, 6d, 7a, 8c.
