True, I think he totally continued what chopin would have as well, if he didn't  :'( pass away...

You think? I sometimes think if Chopin had lived close to the 20th century he might have done something along the lines of Scriabin, just with a more concervative flavor (less weird like his early stuff was).

I disagree with this. They were two completely different composers.

As I said, I can't choose absolute favourites with Liszt...but here's a virtually unknown piece i've been listening to a lot lately and is probably now part of what would be my list of favourite Liszt piano works.

What an incredible piece!

Indeed. If you are not already aware of them, the other two funeral odes in the set may also be to your taste:

Yes, I do know these works quite well. I really like both of them, but not quite as favourites. The Tasse piece is the one I like most, for sure, but the cycle as a whole I think deserves more attention - one of his most heartfelt and profound!

I actually prefer the version of Les Morts for orchestra, choir, and narrator to the piano version although I wouldn't quite call it a favourite among his choral works either. I believe it was Paul Merrick who thought it one of his finest works and an essential psychological document for understanding Liszt and his art.

Well, the second Hungarian Rhapsody was the piece I heard that gave me the impression "Holy cow, Liszt kicks ass!", and it left a huge impression (who cares if everyone knows it!).  I'd probably say that one just because of the genuine reaction it drew from me when I was like 13.  I'm 23 now, and when I hear a new piece by a composer, I find that studying music at university h has forced me to put on a 'critical' listening cap... I zone in on the bad spots and the good spots, and have trouble just kicking back and enjoying a piece.

So, I stick by it:  HR2

Followed closely by the 6th HR, the 2nd and 10th TE's, and his Totentanz.

All of his stuff is great though!
Interested in discussing:

-Prokofiev Toccata
-Scriabin Sonata 2

Totentanz, S525
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C#m

His transcription of the Tannhauser Overture makes me wonder, though. All the slight delays just before certain chords/passages are depressed - did Liszt write it this way or did Leslie Howard take liberties with the score? Also, the tempo is a bit slow and draggy compared to Wagner's original.
