on: October 17, 2004, 06:27:18 AM
i swear they don't exist in australia. does anyone know of any books that would have a decent amount on khachaturian that are in english and might exist in my uni library? they don't have anything on khachaturian individually and i'm finding it highly frustrating grr >:(
now my library does have quite a lot of books, so i'm willing to give any book you suggest a try!

thanks heaps

I like his piano concerto....

I'm not too sure about his other repetoire...maybe that's why I should stop being too hooked on just a few composers....

Just as obsure as Hubert Bath's Cornish Rhapsody.

Everyone seems to have blank faces whenever I mention that piece.  It's a wonderful piece though...a 1930 film score for romantic movies.

good way to start on Khachaturian is go from William Kapell.

Who was once called the 'Khachaturian man' (for his exclusive attention on the composer)

He might have written some article about the composer that might be helpful, but i think it's pretty hard to find material even about the pianist.

He was actually called, "Khachaturian Kapell".  Get either live performance (one is with Ormandy in 44, the other is with Frank Black in 45) over the studio one with Koussevitsky, which is not really representative of how Kapell could blaze through that concerto.

I have Kapell's chopin sonata CDs.  I think he plays the Sonata 3 presto more fluently than many of the pianists out there.

Indeed, overall I think it is the best recorded performance of that work.
