Where do you live?
on: October 24, 2004, 11:51:29 AM
I have been living with my parents in houses all my life, so practicing has never been a problem as far as noise is concerned.
But no I was moving out. I will probably have to live by myself because I can't find anyone who is prepared to live with me practicing all the time. So i'll probably just find a 1 bedroom unit, but will i disturb the nieghbours? Does anyone live in an apartment building or town house or anything like that? do you get complaints from neighbours for practising?
thanks for your help

omg i will live with you! hahaha i had the same problem, well i wanted to move out, except there are so many things going against me- primarily it's because i'm pov and thus can't afford to move out, also finding a sound-proof place would be insane, and also getting someone who could tolerate me practicing would be hard- i've had friends who've said they wouldn't mind, but i think after a while they'd go crazy. and then i'd need another room for my art supplies that has decent ventilation so i don't poison myself.
so i would talk to the owners of the place and see how sound-proof the rooms are, talk to the neighbours and ask if they'd mind, like you could bargain with them what times you'd practice and stuff so not to totally inconvenience them.
i read you're coming up to sydney? where are you studying? i'm at unsw doing a music major in arts amongst other things

I've been studying at Sydney Uni for 4 years now, doing science/arts degree. before this year i was doing maths and russian, but i've suddenly got really into piano again and i'm doing a music major this year and next year, then maybe even honours...
So you live in a house at the moment? i have looked at some apartments already and asked the agent, she thought it wouldn't be a problem as long as i wasn't playing late at night, but i know what you mean, people think they can put up with the noise, but after a while they start getting very pi***d off. like my dad now!

I know how you feel! Except my problem is that I enjoy playing piano at night. I still live with my parents and my brother. To solve this problem, I bought a digital keyboard piano and it's set up in my room. It costs me around $600. I saved up so much money just to get it so I could play at night. I know the keyboards aren't the same as pianos because they're much lighter in touch and everything, but it's a good temporary thing for now. And just to let you know, I bought the Yamaha DGX500. It was one of the cheaper keyboards to buy, but at least it's a full 88 keys.

A house. However, my family complains at night as well. So I use my "regular piano" when no one is home, and then purchased a Yamaha CLP-120 Clavinova that I can whenever I want (using headphones). It works out great for everyone! The only problem is, with being able to practice whenever I want....the family rarely sees me!

I have a Yamaha P200 that I like very much -- about as responsive as I've found in a keyboard -- but for real practice it doesn't satisfy. Also, the practice rooms at the local university have terrible pianos (though i'm taking a tuning/repair course, so maybe i'll be able to help...)
My solution has always been to make friends with someone at a local church that has a nice piano. I put in my 2 hours a day on a 9 foot Baldwin in an enormous sanctuary. It's a great deal, and once i'm certified in tuning I hope they'll let me give back in that way.
