Recital recording-Schnabel, Chabrier, Hindemith, Medtner, Debussy, Ravel, etc
on: August 17, 2014, 11:45:50 PM
Had my final recital of the summer just now, which included lied, chamber music and a chamber concerto apart from some 45 min of solo pieces. Here's the whole gig, in the correct order
Sorry for doing a double post, but just got the video files for my recital last week, and couldn't anymore edit the previous thread I started. Ignore the previous thread
Enjoy!

Hi fnork,
Where I play mostly Russian late romantic works (including Medtner), I was immediately drawn to your Medtner Skazkas, Op. 20. Your renditions of the "Two Tales" were extraordinary. Absolutely a marvelous performance! You were fortunate to have a great piano too.
Thanks for posting your recording here.

Great job on the Medtner!
Thanks for sharing! I'll be sure to listen to the rest when I get a chance.

Thanks for the comments! Yes, I have also noticed that piano-oriented friends seem to have gravitated the most towards the Medtner pieces, and perhaps the op 20 is one of his most instantly appealing opus. I wouldn't hesitate to say that there are other piano works in this program worth hearing however - and the Hindemith, with chamber orchestra, is a real masterpiece!

That Bortz quintet is something. Lovely modern piece. You play it well, and such fine string players. Congrats.

I really enjoyed the Couperin. The sophistication of your ornamentation has really developed!

I've not listened to it all of the pieces yet, but consistently very good playing. The Medtner is of course fantastic, really exciting and a deep sonority. Thanks for the introduction to the Schnabel pieces; I was aware of his compositions by reputation but had never heard any of them. I think the Gustavsson is genuinely rather moving. An interesting synthesis of romanticism and more modern elements (suffice it to say I was quite surprised by the birthdate when I googled him).

Thank you all for listening, and for the nice comments! Glad to hear this comment on ornamentation in Couperin - it's all so sensitive, and perhaps more tricky to do on the modern piano in a way, though the piano also offers more possibilities. Nice to hear that the work on those details seems to be paying off!
And yes, the Gustavsson is for me a very successful mix of, like you say, somewhat different idioms - they all blend very well into a whole, I would say.
Thanks again for listening! Turns out I got another gig with the Hindemith piece in a month, will be fun to revive that one soon again.

I have always liked your posts in the audition room. My favorite is the Prokofiev concerto a while ago.
