Schumann Presto passionato from Sonata in g minor Op. 22
on: January 15, 2015, 06:42:08 PM
Has anyone had any experience playing or studying the original movement? I'm quite intrigued with this movement from this work.
In my personal opinion, I much prefer this movement over the Rondo-Presto. There is a quality that shows that really makes it seem like the final movement of the sonata.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

I don't have an experience in learning it, but I thought about it, when I started to learn this Sonata. I decided against it, because I'm not good in fast playing for a long time, especially when performing for public
. It significaly levels up the hardness of this piece. The other thing is I'm not Schumann's fan, so I don't want to work too much on his music. So in my personal opinion, this version of last movement isn't worth so much effort.
The second version of last movement has its own charm and I think the whole Sonata can be interpreted in the way that this movement will fit. But I see, why some people prefer Rondo-Presto, it fits better to the brace form of this Sonata.

I do agree with you that it may not be worth the effort learning the original last movement. I think one of the obstacles is because of it's difficulty. I had heard that Clara wanted him to scrap this movement because she thought it was too hard.
