4-Octave Scales
on: July 10, 2015, 02:34:45 PM
Is anyone familiar with an exercise that consists of playing 4-octave scales, using both hands, in all the major keys?  It starts in key of C, then there's (I think) a 4-key transition to B, then the same to B-flat, etc.  I have forgotten how to make the transition and haven't been able to find a printed version of the exercise.  Any ideas?

Peskanov publishes books on such exercises.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

According to him this is the kind of exercise that all Soviet children have to master before they can enter college to study piano performance.
Beethoven - Sonata in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 12
Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu, Nocturn in C sharp minor, Op post
Brahms - Op 118, Nos 2 & 3

He can actually write rather nice novelty solos. At one stage I suggested he concentrate on those and cease pounding away at boring double note scales fit only for computers and silent keyboard practice. I don't think that was the right thing to say as he didn't answer. Thank heavens I wasn't born in Russia, I would have done some sterling work on my teachers with a blunt instrument and ended up in the salt mines.
