It is the Gluck/Sgambati Melody from Orfeo.

EDIT SORRY IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THIS
Variations on a Theme by Stephen Foster for Piano and Orchestra "Doo-Dah Variations"
btw does the CPS have this? I wonder if it was ever published? (note not asking/asking here for a copy just curious if you 'has'?)  8)

found the score. will order. not sure how i missed it last time. i thought I had all his published stuff.

great piano + orch piece not to be missed. i've listened to it three times in a row this afternoon alone  :D

sorry i had an old link and didn't paste properly, it was the stephen foster variants i was thinking of

Schirmer published a 1938 version which sounds remarkably alike....  don't scream if there are some differences

I have got the score for that one. Would have been better to use a real banjo.
