There are many different artists in every human field of endeavor. They may not be performing artists like musicians, dancers, singers, et al, but could be artists in other ways like painters, graphic designers, engineers, architects, doctors, surgeons, teachers, et al.
One thing in common with all of these artists is that they will seek a better, more efficient means. Perhaps the means may lead to some end but these artists usually do not look for their creations/work as a means to an end but just another step around an evolving circle with no beginning or end. They are rarely ever satisfied with their work/output and think that they can do better and aim to do better each time. That is why artists keep on trying to get their output to meet their ideals, which are usually bloody high and often just get higher and more difficult the more they accomplish.
Compare this to that of the ordinary person who usually has very low standards in most everything they do - what they are able do is sufficient enough.
I could go on but to be more concise, do you ask this question for an answer to the performing artist, specifically a pianist?
