Topic: Romantic/late classical piece (Read 3918 times)

It's my 8th year of piano education (''additional piano'', because mainly I am violinist). These are a few of pieces I have already played:
- Beethoven's Pathetique and Moonlight mvt. 1
- Gershwin's Prelude no. 1
- Schubert's Impromptu op. 90 no. 2 in E flat major
- Haydn's Sonata in E minor op. 53, mvt. 1
- Mozart's Sonata in B flat major, K. 333, mvt. 1
- Chopin's Nocturnes op. 9 no. 1 in B flat minor and F minor op 55 no. 1
- Debussy's Passepied from Bergamasque
Recently I have finished Chopin's 3rd Ballade in A flat - actually only with this one piece I had some serious troubles but anyway I was satisfied.

I'm looking for a new repertoire, some little pieces of romantic period. I was wondering on Rach's Preludes in C# minor and G minor and also on 1st or 4th Schubert's Impromptus, as I have played the second one. I don't have any other ideas. Maybe some really late Beethoven's Sonatas? Please give me some suggestions.

Schubert Impromptu No 1 and 4 are both fantastic ideas. Beethoven late sonatas ... His late sonatas are ;)practically his hardest, probably best to do an early one. However, the easiest "late Beethoven" seems to be the Tempest Sonata. After pathetique I did the tempest, so that progression makes much sense.

An idea worth considering is to play the Sonata No 1 in Fm by Beethoven. In my opinion it is an underrated gem. Let me know what you think of it.

Thanks for suggestions, what do you think about Brahms' Rhapsodies op. 79? Both are beatiful and both seem to be super difficult. I know it's questionable issue, but would you consider these rhapsodies as more difficult pieces than 3rd Ballade? And which one of the rhapsodies is easier?

I did the Brahms 2nd Rhapsody for my Grade 8. It is far easier than the 1st and also the Chopin 3rd Ballade.

I would give it a go.

In all seriousness, the Beethoven mentioned above might be a good idea, though I'd be hesitant to call Op. 31 "late Beethoven". Late Beethoven to me means Op 81 and beyond, though I'm sure many disagree.

As for actual recommendations, here are some.

Mozart: - D minor fantasy. Not romantic era but definitely a romantic piece.
Schubert: - Impromptus No. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8. (From Op. 90 and 142, respectively).
- Sonata in A minor, Op. posthumous (A huge challenge, but definitely fits the bill!)
Beethoven: First sonata, f minor.

one need not look much past foward thinkers (and similarly talented) Hummel and Dussek.

this is a gem

also in the groovy key of f sharp minor

lol, always more where that came from. so more to come for sure haha. It's not like Hummel is 'unknown' it's just the establishment overlooks him, sadly so, he was one of if not the preeminent virtuoso of day, and sadly, the only play he seems to get once in a while are students learning a horn concerto or other non piano + orchestra work. His style is a grand classical style with conservative early romantic notions, ie just look at the scale of some works.

Dussek, ditto, way ahead of his time, and sadly more overlooked

I really love Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise Op. 22; to me, it sounds like a mix of classicalness and romanticalness. (Whatever that means). Also, the Rondo a Mazur Op. 5 is very pretty, but not as pretty as my face.

Recently Thalbergmad introduced me to the Piano Sonatas of Wolfl. They are very beautiful.
Also, Glinka's Variations on Aliabiev's Lark is very beautiful.
Another suggestion is Mendelssohn: some highlights include the Rondo Cappricioso and also the Fantasy Op. 28.

Sorry that these are all the more famous suggestions.
