Liszt Questions
on: April 18, 2016, 06:21:53 AM
Hi, do you guys think that the Liszt Benediction is playable for people with small hands (I can barely reach a 9th and have to spread in order to play B-C#)? The beginning and some parts in the middle seem to be a bit of a challenge .
Also, is anyone familiar with his transcriptions of the Winterreisse and Schwanengaseng? How difficult are these? I Have played the Erlking and tinkered with Gretchen but am thinking of moving on to something else ... I am thinking of learning im dorfe, Die Stadt and Der Doppelganger.. but any other suggestion would be nice because I am not very familiar with them

If you can play erlkonig you have many open doors. Both die stadt and doppelganger are not demanding in general.
I personally like taubenpost in the swanengesang on piano quite a bit. When I performed the Liszt arrangement of it, I changed things around a lot where the chords alternate in hands with the melody somewhere in the middle. It's a more demanding work but I really like it.
Der Atlas is also good, but I had a lot of trouble with the first transition to B major. Very very awkward.

I think die stadt is quite hard because of all the irregular rhythms.. I am not sure about how useful erlking is because it is really just chords which isn't so prominent in die stadt...
will have a look at the others that you have mentioned.. thanks!

I thought about learning erlkonig, but looking at the score, I was completely unable to assess the difficulty of it. Often it's not until you got it learned that you really find out, but getting an idea should be possible just by looking. Not that one.
Die stadt is genius in creating an atmosphere, and I found there really are very few notes. The arpeggios are very impressive sounding.

There is a section in the erlking which reqire huge stretches in the LH, it isn't technically very hard with big hands but I have difficulty pressing the keys together because my hands aren't very big.
I think if you can play the first part of the Erlking you have already played 55% of the piece. There are 2 other rather different sections (sung by the Erlking) that use a rather different technique. Nothing too hard w. a bit of proper practice I think ...
On the other hand, does anyone know if there is a way of getting round bars 150-151/154-155 of the Liszt benediction??
