latin piano
on: May 17, 2016, 08:19:29 PM
Hello!
Lately I've been listening to lots of repertory like the below:
Albeniz - Asturias (Leyenda)
Tarrega - Recuerdos de la Alhambra
Lecuona - La Malaguena
Piazzolla - Libertango
Nazareth - Brejeiro
Chabrier - Habanera
I would like to listen to more of this stuff. I've tried some music from Granados, Ginastera, De Falla, but haven't appreciated it as much (but maybe I should give it another try).
Does anybody here have any suggestions for latin piano pieces like the above?
Thanks in advance.

first , listen to Francisco Mignone. especially the 12 valsas Brasilenas, and the 12 Valsas de Esquina.

Visitor put it very well already: there's tons of really nice stuff that could interest you, but since you're already into Lecuona a bit, why not give some of his other works a try? I might suggest his 'Andalucía' (the piece from the homonymous suite), 'Ante el Escorial', 'La comparsa', 'En tres por cuatro', 'Ahí viene el chino' and 'ˇNo hables más!'. By the way, Ignacio Cervantes and Manuel Saumell's contradanzas might also appeal to you.
Then there's Nazareth's 'Carioca' tango and Chiquinha Gonzaga's 'Corta-jaca'. Albéniz's 'Seguidillas' and his 'El puerto' are also amazing, as is Granados' 'Paisaje' and Liszt's 'Spanish Rhapsody'.
Here's the links to some of them:

Don't forget Heitor Villa-Lobos. He wrote some wonderful piano music including 5 amazing piano concertos. Start with The Baby's Family suite "Prole do Bebe".
Joaquin Turina wrote some excellent piano music too.
