Chopin Etude op.10 No. 7
on: August 31, 2016, 01:28:19 PM
Hello everybody!

I am currently struggling with Chopin's Etude op. 10 No. 7. I am able to play the right hand part up to tempo, but i keep getting tense very quickly, my playing gets uneven and i have to stop. Can you give me advice how/what to practice to get rid of this problem?

Thank you very much!

Whiteside's book gives a first approximation of the technique needed to play this.

The horizontal dimension (moving across the keyboard) needs to be entirely controlled from the momentum of the arm movement as each key propels you to the next.  The fingers should contribute virtually zero to the horizontal control.

Legato should achieved through dynamic shading and mastery over the trajectory arcs from key to key (with special respect to the long, rhythmic musical line) and not gluey finger control.

Individual articulation should be a coincidence, captured inside the rhythmic act, and not the main focus.  In other words, stringing along individual articulations brick by brick is not how you should think about the coordination.  They are always slipped or tucked into something larger and rhythmic like a dance form.
