Trills in Mozart K280 sonata (1st movement)
on: December 10, 2016, 03:41:32 AM
Can somebody explain to me how one should perform the trills in measures: 2, 42, and 47? I'm assuming that the similar trills throughout would be performed in the same way. I just recently got both volumes of the Henle editions of Mozart's sonatas, so thats the edition I'm using. I know bernhard is well respected here, so if you can, please help.

It would help if you would post a picture of the passage in question. In my edition, the first movement of K280 has no trill in measure 2. The sonatas have been renumbered at least once, so I'm not sure I'm looking at the sonata you are playing. That may be why you have not gotten any replies.

The trills are in measures 2, 42, and 47. I guess the other trills would be executed the same way

Hmm, the trills aren't in my edition, but they are definitely there  in the autograph manuscript, which you can get on IMSLP. I'd play them as a 32nd note triplet, starting on the principal note.

Ok I'll look on IMSLP.

Ok so the trill that was in my henle edition (measure 2) is not present in the ISMLP version. The other trills are present though (42 & 47).

There are several versions of the sonata on IMSLP. Including the original manuscript - if you scan through the original manuscript, you'll find that the measure 2 trill is indeed present.

Ok. I'm going to do that trill as a 32nd note triplet: Bb-C-Bb.
