I feel I have quite a broad music interest, my father had an entire walk in closet full of vinyl albums growing up so I was brought up with music. My parents were hippies in the late 60’s/70’s their massive love for Dylan stays with me, plus it was the usual Beatles, stones, Janis Joplin then anything from gospel to country, jazz to funk in between. When my mum remarried after they spilt my step dad was more into prog rock, Bowie, 70’s glam rock etc. On top of that when I did music in school I realised I loved classical music when I started piano lessons at 11. But I also love, soul, Latin, rock and pop and hip hop. To give you an example in the last year I have been to concerts by both MArtha Argerich and the Sugarhill gang ( not together though..that would be a sight to see!) 😂
Things I have noted over the years-
1- people really try to pigeon hole you into ‘what you are into’
2- there can be a huge snobbishness around music ( is this maybe more of a UK thing?) about what is ‘real music ‘ - hey if it’s got a funky beat and makes me move I’ll listen to it.
3- some have been surprised ( again in Uk maybe?) that I went to a school that wasn’t particularly affluent ..and yet I love Classical music and Opera, ( again think this is more of a class issue in the Uk) I once had someone Telling me how surprised they were that I knew what the Goldberg variations were considering ‘where I was from...’
4-I have a pretty good talent for hearing 1 or 2 beats from a song and knowing what it is...I have quite a photographic memory for music 1960’s onwards..😂😂
5- my husband grew up in a house with no music, I find that really odd as even now his parents won’t have music or the radio on much, even driving....we had music on constantly growing up.
I really really love music, I couldn’t live without it. I love how a song or piece can touch your heart, make you cry or instantly take you back to a time or place. It such a wonderful thing! 😍😍
