Online recital
on: March 22, 2020, 06:24:43 PM
Hello everyone, in these strange times with public events not feasible I will be broadcasting a mini recital from my living room (!) through Youtube, provisionally at 2100 GMT on Weds 25 March.

Paraphrases by Liszt and Thalberg.  :)

I'll post a link to the stream nearer the time. You will be able to access it at the notified start time.

That is about 9:00 am Thursday here, couldn't be more convenient. Thanks Andrew, I'll give it a try.

More and more musicians are doing this or preparing to do it during these strife filled times; they are to be commended for it.

Applauded initiative! Will you be "merely" streaming live, or may we have a video upload in case of 'can't be there now' (my working hours are 'shuffled' as it is, due to; I guess many people here would wish to see/hear you, but are also chronologically challenged!).
In the long run, any words about music are less important than the music. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not worth talking to (Shostakovich)

After some thought and experimentation, I will film the recital, probably tomorrow night, and stream it as if live. That way there will be an extant copy post-stream.

There are other reasons for this. The internet upload speed where I live (not truly rural but far from updated internet services) is truly appalling and I am skeptical that there is any chance of me being able to stream live and maintain any decent quality of video feed. Secondly, if I stream live, I don't currently have any ability to merge in realtime the decent quality audio I'd get from my mics and with the camphone video: I'm led to believe this can be done, but obviously this whole concept is one that has only very recently come to mind and I'd rather do a recital now than investing time and money in something I'm not yet literate in, maybe that can come later.

I see a few famous musicians doing this and I will be looking into this, but in the meantime my internet upload speed is a major issue (put it this way, if a video is 5 mins long, it takes a lot longer than 5 mins to upload!) and I'll do it in a manner I know is going to work!

This should be showing footage from 2100 GMT today (ie in about six hours' time) and will remain viewable post-event. You won't see anything until then, it will return a blank result.

It looks like the video is private.  ::) You may need to set it to "unlisted" to let us all watch it. (And yes, I know the recital has not started yet.)  8)

It should auto activate. I tried a test on another video earlier, but if it fails to do so I'll activate by hand.

You'll need to set it to unlisted. Unlisted means that people with the link can see it, whereas in the case of a private video, you will have to explicitly allow email addresses.

It changes automatically to listed at the time it goes 'live'.

I'll fix it if I'm wrong ;)

Great stuff, thanks for doing this.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Thanks for sharing your playing with use. Highly enjoyable!
Had you planned to play this program on a recital somewhere?

Thank you both.

Actually it was a subset of a programme I used for a recital in the past, it's not absolutely concert-ready at the moment and there were a couple of accidents I would be annoyed at if I repeated them! But in fairness it was unusual circumstances and I wanted to do this as an experiment sooner rather than later: half of the programme I'd already  started revising for a concert I might not now get to do this summer.

I seem to have got an encouraging response to this!

I'm doing further experimentation but I'm rather learning as I go here. Anyways, the current plan (if I can work out some technical details) is that I *will* host a live stream, but it will be dedicated to improvisation. I managed to set up a private one last night for test purposes and the video and audio are really only functional, and if my internet drops a bit there will be a problem. However I think improvisation is something I'd *much* rather do in the here and now, rather than prerecorded. Will keep you updated!

I am also planning to do another similar recital but will prerecord it for reasons of maximising audio and video quality. Once again, I'd like to say that I appreciate the positive feedback I've received and I would like to encourage others to do something similar if they feel able.

Ok, what I'll do is I'll do a dummy run tonight to finalise technical things, and if all goes (relatively) well I'll do a publicly viewable one tomorrow evening (ie about 27-30 hours from now). If my internet isn't sufficient for the purpose, and tbh I doubt I can get high quality audio, then so be it, at least I'll have tried. I managed to do some things in Zoom a couple of days ago, but talking and sharing piano audio are obviously completely different.

I'll keep you updated.

After today's experiment I'm going to try to YT stream 20 or 30 mins live improvisation starting 1800 GMT 29th March, I'm not super convinced both audio and video will be great but we can only see. I'll try to record the audio independently through mics as well just in case the improvisations are actively good but atm I have no way of synching the mic audio and the phone camera in real time.

As UK clock times had their annual change this morning, I should make it clear that 1800 GMT is four hours from now!

I'll post a stream link just before then and I will hopefully be able to start on time.

I'm told it broadcast OK, but for some reason the replay stream is very crackly. I think that will fix once it stops showing as "live" when it in fact isn't. Teething troubles..
