When learning from John Thompson Piano book , How long should a student focus on one piece before moving to to the next?

I'm not familiar with that book or what level it's at. Can you clarify that?

John Thompsons is a series of books for teaching new students. There are a series 1~ 5 or so. In this case the pieces are short, one or two pages(book two) with a relatively modest key signature- example-Menuet -J.S. Bach

Have you defined what skills you are trying to teach as you use this book?  What goals are you aiming for as you go through each piece?

That would be one goal for your student.  I imagine you also have others.  The goals you have would then guide you about how you do things.

If you aim for site reading proficiency, how are you going about it?  Meanwhile, for sight reading itself, if a student stays on one piece for a long time, he's not reading - he's memorized the music.  You'd have to at least give him other material to practise reading. 

What I was actually thinking of is that if you have certain goals, then when the student has reached those goals, that's when you move on to the next piece.
