Saint Saens Toccata vs Prokofiev Toccata
on: August 20, 2024, 08:26:04 PM
Which one is technically harder: Saint Saens (étude op.111 nr. 6) Toccata or Prokofiev Toccata? I love both of these pieces but I am planning to start with the easier one first.

Just by looking at the sheet music, I'd guess that the Prokofiev is easier.
Really though, you should ask your teacher.

Maybe give us a starting point - - - what's your view on these two pieces from listening to them and reading the score?
Are you a student in a piano program?

Personally, I've only played the Saint-Saens toccata before, but I think they both have their own type of difficulty. As everyone else has said, I recommend you talk to your teacher about this if you haven't yet, since he will have the most accurate answer and will know what you are or aren't ready for. If I do have to answer this question though, I think the Saint-Saens' Toccata is harder, because the thirds in the beginning were absolutely KILLER for me to get accurately, and there are particularly nasty bits in the middle and end, so probably just play the Prokofiev first.
