Next Beethoven sonata?
on: October 08, 2024, 08:18:42 PM
I always loved studying Beethoven sonatas and I have so far have finished op 2 no 1, op 10 no 1, op 31 no 2, op 78, and op 90. I’ve been recently wanting to study another one however I don’t know which one I should choose. I’m open to any suggestions. FYI I’m leaning towards op. 7, op. 53, op. 57, op 101, or op. 109. Thoughts?

I think you should play
op 7 - excellent and challenging early sonata
or op 53 - heroic and intense and lengthy
or op 57 - only if you have the emotional stamina for such visceral passion
or maybe op 101 - less played but great work
or op 109 - lovely and profound

All are lovely pieces and quite difficult. Op. 101 might be the hardest one with that final movement, so I'd pick one of the others. They're all harder than the ones you've played so far.

If you liked Op.2 no.1 then try Op.2 no.3. Actually, I have to confess that I learned it alongside Op.53.
The third movement of Op.53 is quite challenging, more so than the last movement of Op.2 no.3.
Both sonatas have very similar patterns and themes, and are in the same key too.
