Notre Dame de Paris reopening music
on: December 18, 2024, 06:03:13 PM
There is a debate going on right now among music circles, about the music used in the Notre Dame de Paris reopening.  I am curious to what this piano community thinks of it.

Here is a video of the music in question.  It takes the form of eight call and response rounds.  The archbishop provides an acclamation, the organ responds, and so on.  The musical responses were time limited to approximately 90 seconds, so whatever the organists choose to do, their task was to deliver an appropriate response within that time constraint.

So what do you think about this music?
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Spoiler Alert
If you have not watched the ceremony or at least the musical excerpt above, I would recommend doing so before reading further.

So what is this debate all about?

These videos do a good job of summarizing the opposing ideas.

A lot of the arguments take the position that this was a unique opportunity to showcase the organ and classical organ music to a global audience.  Many of the people that attended in person or watched around the world may not normally listen to this genre of music.  It was not a typical Sunday mass Parisian audience, and there were numerous world leaders in attendance.

I am surprised it was in French instead of Latin ...
