Conservatory Auditions Repertoire
on: April 06, 2025, 07:49:28 PM
Hey all, I'm a sophomore in high school planning on pursuing a major in music performance. My current repertoire is: Mozart Fantasy in D minor, Beethoven Sonata Op.10 #3, Chopin Preludes #1,2,3,5,10,11,12,13,14,17,22 and I'm currently learning Prokofiev Op.2 #4 and Bach Book 1 P&F #4.

I was hoping to play that same Bach Prelude and Fugue, Beethoven sonata, and Prokofiev etude, as well as the Schumann Ghost Variations and Scriabin Sonata #6 for my auditions but upon learning some more about other people's programs who I know in conservatory I feel that the program I put together would be technically inadequate to get me into anywhere "good". Could y'all please help me either via moral support or by suggesting changes to my program. Thanks!
P.S. Don't ask about the random assortment of Chopin preludes ;)

I'm also working on that Prokofiev etude! I don't know about you, but it's pretty hard for me, especially at that tempo. I think your repertoire is great and well balanced, though I am just a prep student :).

Best of luck on your auditions

Thank you, you as well.

I've found the Prokofiev etude to be mostly reasonable (definitely not easy) but getting the broken octaves on the first page and a half even and up to speed has been a killer.

Hi there im also planning for applying to conservatoires in winter this year, I would personally reccomend you to pick a different scriabin sonata for audition, theres a big point to be made and your teacher will tell you in the future. For auditions you need to think why you pick your pieces and what you want to show with them. I personally am slightly curious why you picked the 6th sonata and what you want to show with it, i think that sonata is a very unique choice and could actually work out in your favour but you must play it really well. Also i might add , it would probably be a very logical choice (simply because ive seen it on some auditon requirements) to learn some chopin etudes if you havent already, and pick some which are suitable for audition, good examples are (op 10 no 1, op 10 no 2, op 10 no 8, op 25 no 11, op 25 no 5). I know at least for Uk conservatoires like RCM technical diffculty is really not a huge deal they really want to hear some sense of artistry and musicality. Just make sure whatever you pick you can play it really really well and things will work out, of course if your applying to top schools like juillard new england curits you will have to play harder pieces but just practice hard and things will work out.
