Piano Concerti for students
on: April 27, 2005, 07:15:02 PM
Newcomer here....
Can any of you all teachers point me to a source for piano concerti? I have students who will be ready for at least one movement very soon, and it would be so helpful to have a description and a list of some sort ranking them according to difficulty.
Thank you!

Shostakovich's second concerto, Opus 102 is good. The first movement is lots of fun, the second lyrical, the third...well, let's just say all those Hanon exercises will finally pay off (actually uses one of the exercises as one of its themes).
(Edit) It's available in a two-piano version, Edition Peters 4772.

I'd say Grieg, Mozart 9, 21 or 23, Haydn D Major or Beethoven 1 or 2
Emphasis on Haydn D Major as the best starting concerto.

Mozart K488 and Beethoven 1 are good 'starter' concertos as they are not too virtuoso but ultimately they can be tough to really do justice to. But you have to start somewhere

Can anyone here give the grading of each concerto or just from the easy to the difficult order?

I like the Mendelssohn. Only problems really come in the third movement...

Hi,
I've been a student for over 40 years
, so I know whereof I speak.
I played Beethoven no1 as a high school/college student, and I think that one is a great one. Mozart no17 (K453) is gorgeous, and technically not too difficult--although interpretively quite challenging.
Although Mozart K488 in A Major is pretty straightforward, I thought the 3rd movement was tricky. Same goes for no 14, K449 in E-flat. Also have played no 19, K459 (F Major) , and the first two movements are not difficult, but oh, the 3rd one. (Great for those who want to work on velocity and clarity!)
That said, I believe all the Mozart concerti are very difficult to pull off well, more than the Romantic works.
All the best, Teresa
