Do you mean brutal like bad?  If so I would say claire de lune only because it's over played, but it's still a beautiful piece, also I'm not fond of Jimbo's Lulliby, or Jardin sous la plui, and several of his preludes:  Minstrels, Audience sur le Terrace de claire de lune or somethin like that, or pas sur le neige or fueille morte..

I do love his Cathderale Engloutie, Feux D'artifice, Hommage a Rameau as well as the rest of the images, and also Danse de Puck

Debussy's Ballade is awesome.  Havent heard complete Debussy's works though.

Actually it feels stupid to leave out the other preludes :)
I love the preludes. Currently practicing the first two.

I think your options are too narrow minded, the choices in the poll are just his best known pieces, not neccesarilly his best pieces.

Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut, from Images bk 2, why is it that this never gets mentioned? Just because it's not as famous as poisson d'or or reflets dans l'eau. It is in my opinion the most beautiful and evocative piece that Debussy wrote. Another one is Hommage A Rameau from Images bk1. Not to mention la terasse des audiences au clair de lune and Canope (a piece that is apparently easy to play but is incredibly beautiful and descriptive) from preludes bk2. If you're talking outside of piano repetoire then there is the cello and violin sonatas, the string quartet, la Mer, the Nocturnes etc. etc.

Glad to hear it... ;). Sorry, I wasn't trying to be fussy I just get fed up of people raving on about the same old pieces, not saying that you do personally, it's just there's so much more out there!  :P :)

First Arebesque? Reveire?

anyway, i really enjoy his Images Book 1, particularly Hommage a Rameau.  I do enjoy Jardins souis la plue. (SP?)  pour le piano, sunken cathedral, Valse Romantique, The whole suite Bergamasque.

best post in the thread. don't worry about being fussy; too many people when it comes to this particular composer only hear a few of his random immature piano works and a few of the commonly peformed of the preludes. the piece you mention.....what is the english translation---and the moon decends on the temple that was--- was SO ridiculed when it was first published and performed, and it is often overlooked, but is really wonderful. lots of people are turned off by it at first...... images book 2 is solid all the way through though, 3 excellent movements, stunning.

i think the hommage a rameau may have been his most conventionally beautiful piece

i stand by my opinion that his sonate for flute viola and harp is the best thing that he ever wrote

i love all debussy pieces, they are ALL SIMPLY OUTTA THIS WORLD!!!!!!!!
But i think my favourite debussy piece, probably his best, in my opinion, is  Pagodes from Estampes.  i remember the first time i heard it, kept on repeating that track for about 2 hours ( not exxagerting hehehe, )

I keep forgetting to mention some other cool pieces of Debussy  :-\ (Sorry, Maarten  :P) He just wrote too many  ;)

La plus que lente (Valse) is very nice and I like Masques too  :) What about Suite bergamasque? Lol.. The 3rd movement of Pour le piano is still one of my favorites  :D (Moet je eens naar luisteren, Maarten, die vind jij vast ook vet..)

Btw, I have a question here.. Who’s your favorite Debussy player? I think Tamás Vásáry and Philippe Entremont are quite good, but I haven’t heard that many pianists yet playing Debussy..

My new favorite Debussy performer is Pierre-Laurent Aimard.  I have his CD of the two books of Images and the Etudes.  Absolutely flawless recordings of each and every piece.  The recording quality is excellent and the piano used in the recording also has a beautiful sound, and Aimard is able to extract the most supple tones from it.  I also like how the playing never seems forced or unbalanced, it's like he knows the music like the back of his own hand.

For orchestral stuff, I like Pierre Boulez's conducting.  I have his recordings of the Nocturnes, La Mer, Prelude, and Jeux.

don't worry , I have the entire debussy cd collection twice or something and listen to it almost every day, so if the aim was on me you where wrong.. then again no name was used.

p.s.  I played a schimmel grand piano once in store and it was slightly tuned up.... It was perfect for debussy, it all sounded right. Any facts about that? I am in no way a piano technicus but I heard hium sayin something about 44.2blaaklfakhfa

The best Debussy recording I have ever heard ( including the Estampes) are by Zoltan Kocsis a hungarian pianist who had won awards for his Debussy performances. I actually just learned and performed all the estampes this spring semester. They are really beautiful and some of my favorite!
