Volodos?!?!?!??!
on: June 02, 2005, 04:23:40 AM
Coming up in another topic with the Rach 3 was Volodos.  Why is Volodos not a more well known pianist?!?!? I have many of his recordings and i think he is a PHENOMINAL pianist.  With as many names that come up in everyday conversation, i think his should DEFINATELY be one of them.  he plays some SICK A$$ Horowitz transcriptions (Rokosky (sp?) march by ear!!!) as well as the RACH 3!!!!!!!!!!! I have heard from some that he is just a "showboat" and things like that but i really dont think so.

Cheers!

Ricky

First of all, I think Volodos is okay, but I think he's not that phenominal as you say.. I'd rather prefer Pletnev (which isn't that well known too these days, just as Volodos)..

Anyway, I saw Volodos once playing at a concert in Eindhoven (The Netherlands), he did some very good things (I believe he played some pieces of Scriabin too, he absolutely played it amazing), but on the other hand.. I wasn't that enthouastic about the pieces he played of Beethoven.. But heey, who am I to criticize  ;)

Just wanted to say I'd prefer Pletnev if we're talking about less well known pianists these days  ;D

P.S. Haven't heard him playing Rach 3 yet  :-[ Do you have a recording of it on the computer?

yeah i have to say i like Pletnev too.  I have a recording of him doing Rach 3 and Prokofiev's 3rd concerto, both are excellent, love the Prokofiev, lovely peice.  I haven't heard Volodos so no comment there

I think he has the full package. Nothing could be more beautiful than his recording of the Schubert-Liszt-Der Muller und Der Bach.

I've actually seen him live once. I think he played Prokofjev's 2nd concerto. As far as I remember, he's got a good sound, which is always refreshing to hear in this bad sound world.  :o

After the concert I found some Rachmaninoff recordings by him, some small pieces, I don't remember. They were great.

Piano Street Magazine:
The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more
