chord fingerings
on: June 19, 2003, 11:47:48 PM
hi all,
i'm interested in opinions on the following:
i am able to play 7th chords (root position in either hand) either 1 2 3 5, or 1 2 4 5, but cannot seem to decide on which to use. depending on the type of chord (major7, minor7 etc..) it sometimes feels better using one over the other. should i remain consistent regardless of chord quality or should i go by the fit of my hand? if i remain consistent will it result in a weaker less proficient finger of the one omitted, or if i constantly vary fingering will it hinder me later on with being able to play without looking at my hands (sight reading)....aarrrrgh...i'm so confused :-/...why can't i make a decision, lol.
p.s it's the same problem with 4 note major or minor
thanx in advance for any insights

I don't know if this helps but, I use different fingerings for chords depending on the situation. It really depends on which note do I want to accent more and what volume do I want the chord to have. louder=equals stronger fingers, softer=weaker, I may be wrong here, but that is what I do.

It depends on the music and on the chord. For example, a C7 chord in the LH may best be done for hands with less 123 finger range, 5421. The same chord in the RH may be done best 1235, or 1234 for bigger hands or full ninth chords.
