In the Suite ancienne, Albéniz exploits the interest of the period in forms from the past. The collection demonstrates his familiarity with eighteenth-century music, notably that of Domenico Scarlatti which Albéniz often included in his recitals, but also his wish to come close to the role models of Romantic pianism, such as Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Weber.
