Sergey Prokofiev
Ten Pieces from Romeo and Juliet
Op. 75
About Sergey Prokofiev's Ten Pieces from Romeo and Juliet
Prokofiev’s ballet "Romeo and Juliet" was completed in 1936 and first performed in 1938. In 1937, Prokofiev created piano arrangements for ten of the pieces. They were first performed by the composer that same year in Moscow.
This selection of pieces showcases a colorful combination of scene and character depictions from the ballet, including the famous theme from “Montagues and Capulets”, adapted for performance by a skilled pianist. Prokofiev’s trademark harmonic and melodic inventiveness is on full display, but this time based on a simpler, more classical tonal language suitable for dance performance.
