Sergey Prokofiev
Six Pieces
Op. 52
About Sergey Prokofiev's Six Pieces
The six pieces for piano Op. 52 are all piano arrangements of earlier works. The first three pieces are from his ballet The Prodigal Son, Op. 46. The Scherzino is originally from the 5 Songs op. 35, the Andante from his first String Quartet, Op. 50, and the Scherzo is from the Sinfonietta, Op. 48. Together, they put the composer's penchant for ironic humor and lively, manic, and sometimes stark sounds on full display.
Composed in 1930-31, they were first performed in 1932 in Moscow by Prokofiev himself. With the composer being a highly accomplished pianist, it is of little surprise that some of the pieces are quite difficult.
