In his thematic catalogue of Schubert's works, the composer's brother Ferdinand stated that the Adagio D 505 was intended as the slow movement of this sonata. There is no autograph by Schubert, but a copyist's manuscript headed "Sonata by Franz Schubert, September 1818" meticulously reproduces the complete Scherzo as well as the two unfinished outer movements.
