Scarlatti Sonatas MP3/midi files
on: August 07, 2005, 07:49:21 AM
I'm just trying out a few sonatas but I have to listen to a recording to be able to play.  So I was wondering where I can find them on the internet.  No access to any record shop at the moment so am completely relying on downloads.  Even that I'm on 52 K dial-up.

Especially looking for K141, K27 and K17

Many thanks!

Jonh Sankey (harpsichordist to the internet) has recorded all 555 of them (midi, with a harpsichord sound though). Have a look here:

https://www.sankey.ws/scarlattirec.html
(Sankey’s site)

Incidentally, he also provided edited scores of the first 176 sonatas here:

https://icking-music-archive.org/ByComposer/Scarlatti.html
(176 sonata scores in PDF)

An interesting feature of these scores is that he makes clear which hand to use, by printing the left hand notes with diamond heads. Keep in mind that this is his theory, not necessarily how Scarlatti would have played them (something that we have no way of knowing until a time machine becomes available).

Here you will find the first 247 sonatas played on the piano:

https://www.claudiocolombo.net/altremusiche.htm

(Piano Mp3 for lots of pieces by several composers, most notably the first 247 Scarlatti sonatas)

Enjoy! :D

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Many, many thanks to you Bernhard.  Angelic you are!

I've listened to K1, K141 and K27 from Sankey's.  I prefer piano rather than harpsichord though. I'm loving and learning K27.

I agree, I also prefer them on the piano (the harpsichord sound after a while really grates on me).

K27: great choice. Arguably the most beautiful of them all. When you have the opportunity, check out Mikhail Pletnev interpretation of it (Virgin Records). :D

Best wishes,
Bernhard.

Will definitely check ot Pletnev's!

I just hope that I can play K27 fast enough to make it sound as beautiful as it should. I'm gonna start practising.  :)

https://mymp3sonline.net/

has all 555 sonatas on harpsichord.

Personally i prefer it on harpsichord... but i'm interested in the piano versions too so thanks for the links!!!!!!!

I'd prefer if anyone has the original sheets and not the computer typesets that Sankey made... they're horrid!
