This kinda broke my heart
on: April 06, 2008, 08:52:22 AM
A lady on the bus the other day was talking about an upright piano she had that she had no use for and couldn't get rid of. She called every church and school in town to come pick it up for free, but none of them were interested. So finally her boyfriend broke it up into pieces, removed the strings to sell as recycled copper, and left the rest by the curb for the spring trash pickup.

Is this common these days? I'm already getting the feeling that nobody wants old-fashioned "analog" pianos anymore, only the digital kind. Can't we start a no-kill shelter or something for them?

It is disturbing when you realize that some people cannot learn or play music because they can't afford a piano.  Places like the Salvation Army store carry pianos.

Here's a fact of life: No one wants something for FREE!

If she had put a value of $200 on the piano, more or less, someone would have bought it real quick.

So if you want to get rid of something quickly, the worst way is to say it's free because it means to the other party that it is of no value to you so why should that take something that is of no value?  If there was a small price on it, even ridiculously small, it means that there is value that is exchanged.  Go figure.

Which lottery are you talking about? In every lottery I've ever hear of, money still exchanges hands to acquire a ticket - It's just another form of gambling.

I never learned what make of piano she had, but some of the famous brands are in fact worth real money. Maybe not with uprights so much, but even there it's possible.
