Looks like Cai Hong need help...
on: September 27, 2008, 02:10:26 PM
hi guys...

I just recognized that my piano play in these days is getting much worse

You see I practice for the music audition at my school.I enter for piano and clavicembalo.Well the audition is still long so I have time to decide which piece I should play.

For the audition I have several pieces that I would play one of them on the audition:
-Sonata KV 330 1st. Movement by Mozart (it really suits my skills I think...)
-Gigue by Handel (for the clavicembalo audition)
-'Raindrop' Prelude by Chopin
-Sun Flowers by Wang
-and a few Jaya Suprana (this is Jaya Suprana : https://www.spock.com/Jaya-Suprana hope that link works)

at the beginning I decided to took KV 330 and Gigue for the audition (because I could play that pretty good),then my friend recommended me some other pieces like Liebestraum and 'Raindrop' Prelude.I also did research for some other music pieces so I could play different kinds of music.I often practice which different kinds of piano, one in my house, one in my school hall, one in the music hall on my school too. Those three piano has different kinds of toning, pedaling weight, and the keyboard weight. My play is getting much worse, maybe because I practice with different kinds of piano? Last time I try Fantaisie Improptu back home and play it like I used to when I play on school, but what that I have done is more like smacking the piano than playing a Chopin. That happened too when I play KV 330.Maybe because of the piano in my house has lighter keyboards than school piano? Then I try Sun Flowers and that thing happened again! then my reflexes goes baaaaad,my concetration too, then my tempo and the dynamic goes wroooong and last time my wrist hurt...(maybe I should take a rest...)

so what do you think?

((Sorry,I have bad english so I'm afraid I could not really explained my problems pretty good...))
dignity, love and joy... nyoo.

You have been playing for a long time; how come this problem with different pianos only happened now?  ??? Did you buy a new piano, or is the one in school new to you? Okay, here's what you do. If you can't play your current pieces on different pianos, play some easy pieces or exercises first. Something you just CAN'T do wrong. You want to get the feel of the current piano. When you feel comfortable, that's when you practice your current repertory.

If Mozart is really your forte, play it. I don't recommend Raindrop although it sounds nice because it's not very impressive to judges. Liebestraum was the winning piece in the grand recital last year, you might want to try it. But neither Liszt nor Mozart is my taste.  :P

Well I must say that the piano in my school is new for me (since I move from other school before...) and yeah I must say it's a pity that this thing happened now for I have playing for a long time :(

Maybe you should consult with your teacher or a doctor (if injury related).

Your piano playing will not get worse with playing many instruments. In fact it will improve you more than anything else, but whether your technique can cope with different action pianos is another matter. However you favor your piano at home because of the lighter touch. That is fine, there are a lot of piano with a lighter touch, most Yamaha's are like that. What piano do you use at home? Is your playing on your piano at home getting worse? If it is then perhaps you are trying to play your piano at home like you where on the heavier action piano at school?

When practicing on heavy action pianos play slower. Your fingers need time to get accustomed to the action. The slower you play the more you will notice when parts of your hand becomes stressed because of the heavier action. You can try to act against this when you play slower but at tempo you are constantly hit by issues you cannot cope if your technique is not strong enough.
