Chopin: Etude Op. 25/11 ("Winterwind")
on: October 14, 2008, 02:19:10 PM
My first attempt at this etude. I know there is no dynamic range in this performance, but I just began working on this with Mr. Rose, who can play it perfectly.
Tell me what you think.

Hi mikhail,
I give anyone who undertakes this "Winterwind" Etude with Chopin's unconventional fingerings a lot of credit. You do a fine job performing it. The dynamics will fall into place in a short while with further practicing. Bravo!

You drew back the curtains for me on this whirlwind piece that I have always liked. I was especially impressed from 1:30-1:39 and 2:12-2:16.

I hope that I will be able to get this up to Backhaus' speed............in 20 years
His recording is simply mind-blowing!
I think I playing the right hand to loudly...............
When I play it at this speed, the melodic line does not flow. It needs to go much faster.

Most people think of Backhaus as a Beethoven specialist, and he was superb there, but he could also play Brahms, Schumann and Chopin as well. In fact, he was the first to record the 24 Chopin Etudes, a performance so extraordinary that it is still a landmark in the Chopin discography. Backhaus was one of the greats.

Beautifully played... Well done!
I wish I could play this etude, it would be so much fun. Did it take you a lot of work to get it up to this standard?

actually, there is a dynamic range- you will be able to see that in many professional recordings.
