He's 19 - Don't judge a job half done - it's not fair in any other field. He dosen't claim to be a finished artist but he is working in that direction as are many all over the world. When he makes his carnegie debut let the critics decide his fate. :-\

As a 19 yrs old, he should already have all the technique. And I don't see the reason to be so impressed by him.

For someone younger and more talented than he is, go to pianosociety.com, and check out Paul Wee.

aka, e60m5, played islamey when he was 12.

And check out his Schubert Wanderer and Islamey recording he made for Julliard screening on that web.

now, THAT's what i called Talented.

Funny, I was just watching his videos yesterday (Serg's, that is). I actually kind of liked his Chopin Scherzo, but I didn't watch it ALL the way through, and that Bach concerto movement wasn't at all bad...but some of the newer clips, with him in that fancy-looking hall, were quite dry, especially the Pictures at an Exhibition, and he had an almost bored look on his face and made careless motions at the keyboard, giving me the impression that he wasn't trying his best because certain parts were very easy, and especially when compared to the rest of his repertoire. His Moszkowski and Czerny etudes were horribly dry, I thought, and lacked little originality.

For what he is, though, I don't think he's really that bad. That is to say, he isn't exactly touring the world like a Horowitzian virtuoso or getting himself a bunch of publicity; I'd say he's about as well known as he deserves to be.

Like I said I'm not that 'impressed' by him but he in no way claims to be a prodigy, wunderkind or young Horowitz he says that he likes to play and that he hopes to build a big repertoire and that this list is work in progress. Judge it for what it is and don't expect everyone with a web page to be the next big thing. A lot of people play concerts and concertos who didn't play islamey at 12 that doesn't mean we have to always compare them to one in a generation that is just totally unreasonable and in any case at 19 he has time to develop. Some of the really great talent does flourish late - i'll say it again  - when he sits on the stage of Carnegie hall saying I am the new young virtuoso on the block rate me and tell me how good or bad i am then do it BUT in the meantime if you want a young prodigy with full marketing team backing to run into the ground you should try ingolf wunder. The name says it all!! ;) he has his own webpage.

i think you are just jelous of him... he updated the site.. i think he plays great.
see the liszt libsatraum (what an emotion) played by him.
it's true that sometimes his playing is "dry" but other than that he is really good and his technique is amazing.

Well, the best horseman is always on his feet I guess...  ::)

Serg Van Gennip might not be the next Horowitz or Richter, but he certainly does not deserve your degrading comments.  Give the guy a break, he's only 19 years old.
It works better if you plug it in...

I've heard a lot of his preformances on his site and still think he's quite musical and technically I don't see very big problems in his playing. He seems to be very relaxed. It's his problematic interpretation that bothers me the most. But I think if he will have a good teacher, he can be pretty good, although I agree that he probably won't be the next Horowitz or Richter.
I think it's also a question of maturity. I hope he's a normal person without too much eccentricities. It's really about his interpretation, but I still think he has talent.

he's not so bad... except he seems incapable of playing evenly and pushes rubato waaaaay too far so listening to him play is very labouring and frustrating.  His technique kind of ....well.... sucks for cadenzas and such and the touch is usually abraisive and painful to my ears.
