Classical Cd's for $1 each!
on: December 29, 2007, 04:01:23 AM
Woohoo!  Some lady is selling her husband's 500 classical cd's for $1 each.  I'm going over tomorrow to look.  Hopefully there will be some good stuff!

I remember grabbing a handful of "Vienna Master Series" double CDs (PILZ) at Best Buy for $1.50 each. That was more than 10 years ago  :'(

I once bought a virtually unplayed "used" copy of Gould's complete Bach toccatas for $4.  Unfortunately, the store, "Record Breakers" has relocated into the city, and the price of gas would obliterate the bargain...

Overpriced.

Whose toccatas do you prefer?  Or dost thou spit on the toccatas, those subpar inferiorities of the great almighty Jean-Sebastien, who should do naught but fugue and have children?

When Mus Faculty at the local uni has it's twice a year library sale, CD go for $5 and Cassettes for $1.  I find $5 is a bit much for used library CD's.  $1 Cass aren't bad considering most of them are Deutsche Grammophon
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

So then, might you be so kind as to answer the first question with the name of a favorite pianist for the Bach Toccatas?

OK, while two Hewitt fans are here - what is it about her that you like? I seem to be in a minority but she does nothing for me. I feel I may be missing something....

Its the way she throws her hair back. It does me every time.

In addition, her Bach is the purist crystal.

Her playing is not highly eccentric yet always remains interesting.  Attention to details in the score, while still remaining highly creative and artistic.  Her readings are not cut and dry literal, but take into account the sonic architecture of the music.  She does not allow the piano's limitations to castrate the music - tone, phrasing, and pace borrow qualities from other sources.

Exquisite sense of ornamentation.  Repetitive material is treated with a sense of artistry -  iterations are not stagnant but rather organically grow.

Her playing lends itself to deep listening.  The more you put into the experience the more you see in return.

I guess it is all those years of Gould that has prevented me and some others from liking Angela Hewitt. Though it is not just her Bach that I don't like. Her Messiaen is terrible as well.

Hewitt SUCKS.

Everytime you dislike someone, you talk so harsh about them. Try being a bit more kind.

Yeah, even though I agree with you, I think you should be a little bit nicer about it. You're such a belligerent character.
