I need some cheap piano purchase help
on: June 19, 2005, 12:26:54 PM
Since I have a below 88 key keyboard. It it very poor for piano works. Firstly, I miss range, secondly, very little dynamics possible in terms of volume and no

So I need something different. But money is a big issue. I now have like 600 euro and I need something else.

Sound quality is not important. This is going to be a practice issue.

First thing is upright vs digital. I get the idea that a digital piano can be just as good or better in terms of how it feels to play, plus of course the sound issue. But what about in this price class? Second hand or not?

And tuning, this is going to cost money too. Plus I would really prefer a piano in 440, so not tuned flat. As far as I can see a digital piano is a big plus.

What options and properties should I look for in a digital? Any info?

Yamaha P-90, P-120, or a used P-250 and similar models from Roland and Kawai. The P-120 and P-250 have more advanced pedalling capabilities. This is something that people often overlook when purchasing a digital piano. Most digitals have very good actions, but the pedals are a big part of a piano too.

Yes, I need to learn pedalling. I will definitely look into that.

Good to hear that the action is pretty good on digitals nowadays.

For cheap pianos, watch the classified adds in the papers closely.

Realize that it costs about $300 to get professional movers to move a piano.

Locate a relative that owns a pickup truck.   Find 4 fellas with strong backs that want to earn a 6-pack a piece for a little lifting.

Watch the paper for someone selling a piano for anying less than $1,000 or "best offer."
Chances are this is someone who has decided they would rather sell a piano, rather than moving it.  Call them up, tell them you will move it for free if they knock the price in half.   If the price is less than $500 tell them you will take it off their hands for free.  Don't laugh.   People who are moving in 2 weeks will get more and more desparate to save the cost of moving it.  Nobody wants to spend $300 moving a $500 piano.

I have given this advice to several people who have managed very cheap pianos.  (I supplied the truck)  Chances are these pianos were off-brand uprights, but I would prefer that to a digital anything any day.  Cheap pianos make great practice pianos and you can give them away when you move.

I went to a shop today. I played a P120 and a Casio stage digital piano.

I am really leaning towards the practicality of a digital stage piano. Now, I am easily impressed but the action and the sound seemed pretty good. There is a big chance I would move to a student room next year. So in that case I would need a new digital if I buy an acoustic now.

The salesperson said they normally sell for 1650 euro. But they are going to move to a new building so everything is way cheaper. The price now is 1125 euro. He couldn't give me a price after the movement. The Casio is 550 euro but the sound was quite bad.

Thanks for your advice, Doodle. I will remember it. I realise that with luck you can buy a very good upright for a good price. I don't think I know anyone with a truck so I don't see this working for me. Maybe in the future.

Now I need to check if that 1200 euro is really a sharp price. Then I need to talk my parents in adding some money.
