Ehtüd. The 'ü' is an umlaut. So, it's not really 'tood', but that's probably OK, because it's difficult for English-speaking people to pronounce the 'ü'.

I'd say the german 'ü' is a mixture of 'i' and 'u', with a little bit of 'o' (hard to explain)

That would be the right way to pronounce it  ;D [Etüd]

The pronunciation of the word "etude" depends on what language you're speaking.

The origin of the word comes from the French word étude, which itself comes from the Old French word estudie.  When a word is Anglicized, the pronunciation changes of course.  So the way to pronounce "etude" in English is "ā'tūd" or Ay (as in may) Tude (as in rude).

(This information comes from my dictionary, of course!)

does anybody have a record saying "etude"?

I always thought it was pronounched in different ways in different languages. Never thought the u would sound as german umlaut.

If I am not mistaken, 'u' in French is always pronounced like the German 'ü'. Of course, the French would say "Well, you pronounce ze German 'ü' like ze French 'u'. Voila!"

Anyway, exceptions exists, of course (after all, we are talking about ze French ;D):
'ou' as in 'Ouverture' is like the English 'u' as in 'rude'
'au' as in 'Jeux d'eau' is like the English 'o' as in 'course'
'eu' as in 'Jeux d'eau' is like the English 'o' as in 'word'

See, ze English ave exceptions too ;)

Selim,
Thanks for clearing that up, once and for all.

I think every language should make an effort to pronounce foreign words their original way. So, let's all practice our Ü. The tip 'between i and u' is pretty good. Stop halfway at the right moment, and you're almost there. Like Etude  ;D

Form your lips to make an "oo" sound, but inside your mouth pronounce "ee" and you'll come pretty close to the French "u".

Selim's recording cleared it up for me, thanks. Also, this "u" sound you guys are talking about shouldn't be too hard because it's in English too. Look at Baohui's example of intuitive. It's there in English.

BTW, while there's a pronunciation topic around, how is Argerich pronounced? As in Martha Argerich? I just want to check with someone who knows so I know I'm getting it right, and I haven't been saying it completely wrong all this time...I currently pronounce it Ah-Jer-rick. Is that right?

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
