music major/ minor in universities
on: June 24, 2005, 07:23:57 AM
i'm currently a senior and need to start applying for colleges in the upcoming fall... i want to keep music throughout college either as a 2nd major or minor but i'm not really sure of what these two entail. also, what universities have a strong music program (not conservertories). i'll probably end up majoring in business but i want to continue my musical studies. also, how is the audition process for colleges? any help is greatly apprecitiated.

There are some non-conservatory schools with excellent music departments, we've had a few threads about them:

The suggested schools were
Yale
Boston University (I know several music students there, I hear extremely good)
Indiana University (I know they have a strong violin program)
University of Illinois Urbana
Northwestern
Columbia
U. of Michigan (highly recommended faculty, a concert pianist I've studied with studied with them)

There's also a huge, well-funded music department in one of the U. of Texas campuses (same concert pianist recommended it). Also there's Vanderbilt, with the prestigous Blair school.

It is so subjective,

This is an area where you should know someone, in my opinion, or go to some reference's like:

Cass and Birnbaum.."American Colleges"...or another guide...

Actually, there are MANY fine schools that have good music schools...even smaller schools, where you do indeed have an opportunity to get better attention....And you can often get the best of both worlds by attending a regional campus of a large school...That way you will find opportunity for master classes on main campus (at least in some schools), that you attend as a full student...

In addition, it is necessary to look carefully at the region in question CAREFULLY, for total living and cultural opportunities...as well as job opportunities in the event you will work while attending....In Truth,

I believe in texts and guides, and in guidance counseling...
