Help me choose a song to learn...
on: June 25, 2005, 04:56:51 AM
Alright, I consider myself of intermediate skill level (composing and theory is more my thing)...I'm 18, and the hardest song I've learned to play is Bach's 1st of his fifteen 3-Part-Inventions in C Major...

My technique probably isn't where it should be, but I want to push myself...however, I've been trying some songs with some chords spanning more than an octave in one hand and it's really uncomfortable with my current technique level...

Classical music isn't my favorite genre, although I like it...and once in a while I find songs I LOVE...especially by Ravel, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Mendellsohn, Lizst, Chopin (those are some I can think of off the top of my head)...

However, those composers have some VERY hard songs, and I'm not quite familiar with their full repetoire...

So, I need help in selecting my next song to learn, maybe a step or two up skill-wise from the Bach one I learned (but not exceedingly difficult for my current skill level), and of a later era (romantic to more contemporary)...I want it to be moody, with slower parts and faster more technical parts if possible, and not TOO long...

That post was longer than it should have been...

Anyway, thanks so much for any help!  Open for any suggestions!

Perhaps a nocturne in b-flat minor by Chopin, Op. 9 No. 1

The first thing that comes to mind is Rachs c# minor prelude.  Its very "moody". It has a slow and a fast part, and its one of Rachs easier preludes. Nothing spans more than an octave if I remember correctly. This piece might be overplayed but it is none the less a wonderful work.  Very dark.
