Not all grands. It is said that Pleyel pianos of today have light actions. (My vintage one had). Steinway and Sons can have a tough one, depending on the piano. To me, the Yamaha Concert Grand that I played on UIL Competition had a surprisingly tough action, I am not sure if it was my extreme nervousness though. I am the kind of practicer that destructively bangs on the keys ::). But at the performance, I had to play Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor Op. 23 No. 5. I went up the stage, warmed up, and started. That was a piano that I had never played on before. The combined nervousness, which made my hands feel weak, and the heavy action, made the performance sound tolerable, not so good. I would have given an 87 as a grade to myself...Several of the notes didn't even come out.
Anyway, my Clavinova's action is enough to make an injure. After practicing for 4 hours the Chopin Etudes every day, I had to stop for 3 days, because I had this crushing pain on the wrist.

Best wishes,
Mario Barbosa
