Expenses And A Career
on: June 26, 2005, 11:56:56 PM
Hey people, it has been a while, just a couple of things have recently turned up, and I guess I'm looking for advice... again!

First thing, I stopped with all the darn Burgmuller music until I had Innocence to a reasonable level! Three days ago I started on a Chopin Prelude (No.4 - E Minor), and I think I'm progressing well... can perform hands together the first 3 staves >_<
But here's the first problem, there are keys in it which my keyboard doesn't have further down on the score ¬_¬ Too far down! I know on this basis alone, it doesn't mean I have outgrown it, but where do you guys (and gals?) get £10,000 from for a piano!? I think it's about time I got one...

Aside from that, I finished my college course on Friday (Hurrah!), and I can finaly get a Piano teacher again! The last one was alright, but I'm afraid... she is gonna make me do scales and stuff... is that wrong of me? I mean this applies to any teacher! I know bits of theory really, just so I can play the pieces!
Yesterday I talked to my parents about forgetting my next computer course and going Piano all the way in my life, but... if I dislike such exercises... does it mean I won't make it? Do I need to love every part about learning? Hell, I don't mind theory at all... I just learn a scale when the piece requires it :/ Plus I think I may very much dislike needing to learn pieces I don't like! I don't see that point in that... in saying that, those ABRSM requirement pieces didn't seem apocalyptic, I hope the teacher gives me some freedom in "piece picking"

Anyway, I guess my main issue is trying to decide whether to make a career of the Piano or not, especially if I won't enjoy every aspect? I plan on getting on job to pay for these lessons in the mean time. I figured if I practise the next few months, and I find I dislike it (hope not!), then I can move onto my computer course anyway...

Well, thanks for reading about my Dilemnas and for any advice you can offer! >_<

I'm doing all the scales and such because I have to in order to get my diploma.  I probably wouldn't otherwise.  I can say, though, that I don't regret it at all!  I'm glad I have to because it helps me so much with my pieces, and key identification, and note reading, and endurance, and flexibility, and, and, and...........  I wouldn't have the motivation to do it if it wasn't required, but I'm sure glad it is.

Well, specificaly on the topic of Practising scales then, I don't understand the point in it... I'm learning a piece with E Minor, and I swear the only thing I need to know is when the black keys replace the white keys! I am probably wrong, but working out the best fingering to scale up on E Minor wouldn't really help me when I'm hitting keys all over the show, hence to make it worth while, you need to perform EVERY key combination to understand the hand movements... rather then just the ones needed for scaling up :/

I admit scaling down has already happened in one piece I have learnt, but there is plenty more random key hitting that isn't scaling and requires different hand movements ^_^ Correct me now! :D

But I think I see watcha mean Lagin, I wouldn't have finished my course if it wasn't for the final grade I had to achieve >_<
