It's so funny that....
on: July 08, 2005, 01:46:42 AM
I think it's pretty funny that you guys get so upset and bothered at anything with swear words...  I'm mainly talking about the people who keep posting about how rap sucks and that they swear too much.  I bet you're all really old people.  hehehe.  Or you guys live in a fantasy world where no one around you cusses....

no. actually i have attempted to reform my own son, but to no avail.  i think it'll just run it's course and fizzle out.  frustration can be vented this way, but doesn't really accomplish much.  for instance, have you ever heard someone swear a lot and then get their own way (like with a police officer during a traffic stop).  on the other hand, if you have alittle self control, people might actually give you the benefit of the doubt (like the judge during a divorce or custody battle).  just an idea.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

I agree with pianonut. Also it just makes you look completely uneducated if you are unable to construct a sentence without using a swear word, when the English dictionary is full of descriptive words.

Also it is down right rude to swear, as you never know if a child is listening or an older/elderly person who could take offence easily.

It is absolutely, positively impossible to work on a motorcycle without swearing.  It's been proven; you can't even debate it. :D

pianonut, my mom always let me swear, and I learned through the negative reactions of the world around me not to do it.

I'm just saying that swearing is kinda unavoidable.  I mean, even the nicest of nice people will do it occassionally.  I don't just walk up to some and tell them to F-off or anything like that.  I don't even say that to people when I'm mad or upset (mainly because I don't want to get my a55 kicked).  Now, it just seems like something to say when you mess up.

I for one hardly ever hear people swear (sheltered life), but I do realize it's rampant.  In fact the more i read people doing it here (it's still a swear even if you leave out letters), the more I see how contagious it can become.  It would be very easy for me to start incorporating it into my language. For me,(not speaking for anyone else, so don't jump on me for having a personal oppinion about my own conduct guys), for me, I think it's like anything else on this earth, first it is appalled at, then accepted, then the norm, and then, thus, accepted as "right."  I won't be a conformist in this matter.  I choose to be odd, and wierd, and different, and I choose to respect myself for my decision.  My two cents.

I find swearing a sign of lack of intelligence. Think about it. If you take the cuss words literally, the sentences you get are hilarious. Take for instance. I was at the garbage dump dropping off a busted microwave. The old man that works there asks what is wrong with it. I told him that I didn't know. He proceeds to tell me, Well I will take it home and F*** with it tonight and see what happens. Now, I know he is going to go work on it, but if you take the words for literally meaning, the dude is one weird perv and the pictures that it creates in my mind are down right hilarious.

Say what you mean.

Yeah I don't swear either. And I don't really hear much swearing around me, when I do I notice it - which shows I'm not de-sensitized to it.  Maybe it's a Candian thing.

Assuming you meant "Canadian"...I think it must be a function of your environment...I'm in Toronto and I've heard even fairly young children at the playground use terms I hadn't even heard as a teenager...I heard a teenager on a bicycle talking loudly on a cell phone with a girl about the sexual activities they had participated in...depressing, really...how are they ever going to get a decent job if their vocabulary is so limited and offensive?

selfs stupid smart yo

and self swears like a salor

some places people swear more than others

like detroit - and you end up talking like the people you grew up around

its got nothing to do with intelligence but language

if you've learned to do it, from the people around you, at a young age you will probably do it for the rest of your life

plus Fricken has multiple meanings

and if you disagree

Well, you kinda have to realize that the F word has more than one meaning.  It just doesn't mean to engage in sexual activities.  Nowadays, it has so many meanings.  So even if you did take the sentence literally, it would still make sense.  Just look it up in dictionary.com

"I think of swearing as being like fine spices...."

One of my friends is a writer, and he said that if you use swear words too often, they lose their impact, so it's best to reserved them for times when you really want to use them...

my father taught me something similar - the power is in not using the swear words you could.

What a ridiculous statement. The way one would talk at a job interview and the way one would talk socially are too entirely separate things, just as the way you write when writing to your lawyer is different to the way you write when writing to a friend. The diction used is of an entirely different nature: swearing is a perfectly legitimate way of enhancing social language in order that it may be differentiated from formal language.
